Frequently Asked Questions

Land-Based Retreats and Teacher Trainings

Shared rooms & shared bathrooms
Private rooms are usually available but cost more. Depending on the accommodations or resort there's normally a shared room option. Sometimes it's two double beds, sometimes it several singles.

Air conditioning
Nights are normally breezy and cool(ish). Almost all the resorts have air conditioning but remember that the power will go out every now and again.

Meals
It sort of depends on the island. We shop at the local markets and there are some incredible choices for everyone. Sometimes we grocery shop every few days and prepare meals ourselves, other times there's an on-site chef that handles everything for us.

Grocery shopping
Don't expect Whole Foods - it's usually small grocery stores and farmers markets.

Days off and down time
Depending on the retreat or teacher training we usually do three days of scheduled activities and then one day off to do whatever you'd like. But you're always welcome to do whatever you'd like.We really try to keep our days balanced with lots
of fun and down-time every day.

Extra activities
There's so much do while you're here. We always try and include hiking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and diving. And depending on the island there might also be ziplines, waterfalls and rainforests, incredible local markets, and amazing island culture and history to learn about.

Getting around the island
It depends on the island but we usually do a lot of walking. For the bigger islands we'll take shuttles, rent bikes or scooters, or take cabs.

What to pack
The lighter the better. Bathing suits, sundresses, comfortable & loose clothing for the high humidity. We'll send a packing list before each retreat and it will be based on the specific islands we're visiting and the season.

How much yoga do we do
As much as you want. Normally we'll do two yoga classes each day, with different styles. We'll also do some meditation, but everything is optional.

Do I have to always be with the group
You're welcome to do whatever you'd like, we want everyone to have the best time possible. We try really hard to balance our adventures with yoga & wellness, sightseeing, local culture, watersports and exploring our surroundings. As long as you're being smart and safe you're welcome to go off on your own!

Alcohol
That's up to you. We do enjoy a glass of wine with dinner or a mai tai at sunset, but we're also usually up early for yoga and adventures.

Currency
There are banks and ATMs on the bigger islands but if the power goes out the ATMs won't be working. U.S.$ are the most common currency between the islands.

Sailing Retreats and Teacher Trainings

Seasick
Most people get a little a queasy for the first day of sailing between islands. It usually goes away as your body gets used to the motion. Dramamine works, staying hydrated helps a lot, and there are also really great seasickness patches or wristbands.

Accommodations

It depends on the island we're visiting. Sometimes we'll sleep on the boat, other times we'll camp on the beach or in beach huts, sometimes we'll trek inland and spend the night in a National Park or rainforest.

Food, meals & groceries

Most islands have fair sized grocery stores and markets with supplies that you'll be familiar with. Fresh fruit and veggies can be seasonal though, depending on the size of the island.

Showers

Fresh water on the boat is limited so showers are short. Normally everyone showers in the evening, it makes for a more comfortable nights sleep.

Bathrooms

There are bathrooms on the boat, but they're shared between everyone. You'll have privacy when needed.

Sharks

There are some sharks but most are harmless. We'll have an orientation on the first day to talk about everything from sea urchins to coral reefs and everything in between.

How many different islands will we go to

It depends on the weather and how far apart the islands are. We try to do short island hops for a couple of hours at a time, occasionally it's longer though.

Hurricanes

There's normally plenty of warning with hurricanes. Some years have several, some years have none at all. Hurricane season is observed as June to November. We're always on the radio listening to the weather, and will change plans as needed to keep everyone safe.

Down time and alone time

We're big fans of time by yourself. It may be to read or write, go for a beach stroll, shop in the local markets or to fall asleep in hammock.

Arrival

We'll meet you at the airport or ferry landing and then find our way together back to the boat. We'll send everyone a detailed information email when you book your retreat or teacher training so that you know exactly what to pack, what to expect, and where to meet.
